Periodontal Maintenance

The Importance of Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria. The bacteria cause plaque to develop along the gum line. The infection will cause the gums to swell and bleed. In addition, the plaque will cause damage to the bone that supports teeth.  For most people, flossing and brushing at least two times each day along with professional cleanings will help prevent gingivitis and Periodontal Disease.

The Importance of Proper Oral Hygiene

Losing teeth to gum disease can be avoided by proper Oral Hygiene and periodontal maintenance. For adults over the age of 35 proper Oral Hygiene is particularly important. Adults above this age lose more teeth due to gum disease than cavities. Proper Oral Hygiene should include brushing and flossing teeth at least twice each day. If possible, brushing and flossing after each meal will significantly reduce the risk of gum disease. Adults over 35 lose more teeth to gum diseases than from cavities. Gum disease is prevalent and affects three out of four people at least once during their lifetime. Regular visits will reduce the risk of gum disease.

Plaque will harden into a porous and rough calculus often referred to as tartar. It must be removed daily to avoid tartar build-up on the teeth and under the gum line. Plaque can be kept to a minimum by visiting the dentist at least twice a year.

Periodontal Disease

Bacteria that cause plaque produce toxins that cause inflammation of the gums. The gums will appear red and swollen. Many people will notice bleeding while brushing their teeth. This is an indication professional treatment is required.

Gum Disease Prevention

The most effective method of preventing gum disease is to brush and floss regularly. In addition, visiting the dentist every six months for professional cleanings will help keep gums healthy.

Proper Oral Hygiene is not always enough to prevent Periodontal Disease. Professional dental treatment is required to prevent the disease from progressing.

Factors that may cause unhealthy gums include:

  • Cigarette Smoking
  • Grinding and clenching teeth
  • Diabetes
  • Extreme stress
  • Medications
  • Poor Diet
